It's a competitive world out there and the firefighting training programs are no exception. The job itself is going to require you to perform certain physical tasks as well as mental tasks. The better you prepared the better your chances are when it comes to getting into the program for training. In order to be accepted you will need to successfully complete a physical test as well as two written exams.

Yes, your physical condition is essential to landing your potential position, but you will also need some academic contributions. You have to recognize that getting into a firefighter training program isn't as easy as just signing up. You have to realize that there is vast world of competition. The qualifications list that you need to have a high school diploma to apply, which is true, but there is more to it than that.

Firefighting training programs are more accessible to those that have additional education that is related to the field. Whether you earn a degree in fire sciences or you get your certification as a paramedic, you increase your chances of being accepted with each year of additional education.

There are several examinations that you will have to get through, two of which are written. Your physicall prowess is up for evaluation. So is your mental state, criminal history, and any other basic indicators that you might not be the best recruit. Of course, once you pass the exams, as well as the examination of your life, your training will begin.

Be prepared to go back to school. Yes, there are many physical tests that you will have to take throughout your training, but you will be expected to pass academic courses as well. These courses are related to the fire fighting industry and may include everything from Chemistry to English to Physics to help you prepare for the day that you move from training runs to actual runs.

There is no standard physical training set but most academies do similar drills. Carrying heavy metal 12 foot ladders through the obstacle courses is pretty standard. You will be expected to show that you are strong and fast enough to turn the fire hydrant wrench a quick 17 times to open it up and close it. There is a great deal of speed and strength required for crawling through small and tight spaces in order to reach potential victims.

Firefighting training is a full time job dedicated to the dual task of helping you get prepared and making sure that you will stand up to the job. Making it through the firefighter training will ensure that you are not only strong enough physically but mentally able to handle the stress.
