If you have done much of any research on garage floors, then you know that adding pretty much any type of finish to your flooring will do a lot to protect your concrete garage floor, prevent motor oil stains, and lots of other chemical damage. However, there are also some lesser known benefits to be had with a garage floor finish, as well. If you're not sure that it's worth it yet, then just keep reading.

Garage Floor Finishes Can Prevent Damage
Besides just motor oil, there are other things that are damaging to garage flooring. Concrete that is left completely untreated, for instance, will usually crack. Most people do not know that any concrete's durability relies heavily on a seal of some sort. Although an epoxy garage floor coating will certainly provide this seal, a garage floor covering of any type, even a rubber mat, will protect your concrete more than nothing at all.
Many Garage Floor Finishes Increase Your Comfort As Well
Many garage floor coverings will advertise such features as "anti-fatigue," or "soft step". These features are directly for your benefit, the human. Humans were never meant to be walking around on something as rock hard as concrete. Our feet are really best suited to soft soil and springy grass that is not nearly as hard as a concrete garage floor. Garage floor mats, epoxy coatings, and tiles are designed to add some softness to the floor, cutting down on how much jarring your knees and back have to absorb. Be sure, however, to check the features of any garage floor coatings to make sure that they offer a softer step. A garage floor mat would be the best covering, as far as your joints are concerned, especially if you plan to be laying on your back a lot.
Garage Floor Finishes Can Also Improve Your Garage's Lighting
I know this sounds strange, but it is true. Regular concrete is exceptionally poor at reflecting light which is, if you think about it, a good thing. Imagine how much more difficult it would be to drive during the day if all the concrete roads reflected the sunlight into your eyes! In your garage, though, anything reflecting light will help you out because it will increase the overall brightness, allowing you to see things better. If you plan to be working in your garage a lot, then make sure you choose a garage floor finish that will help in this area. Obviously dark colored mats, tiles, or garage floor paint won't help nearly as much as, say, brightly colored garage floor tiles.
A Garage Floor Finish Might Even Improve Your Mood... No, Really
Getting weirder and weirder, aren't we? Seriously, though, think about it. How much nicer would a shiny new car look on shiny garage flooring as opposed to drab gray? I'm not in the statistics business, but I bet if you were to take a poll of the most depressing color out there, gray would rank pretty highly. More and more studies are coming out every day that point to color having far more of an effect on our psyche than we ever thought possible or even considered, and that's just solid colors. Patterns can be exciting, too. Imagine how much nicer it would be for a car racing fan to work on his car on top of checkerboard garage floor tile? Working on a car can be frustrating. Do you really need your garage floor helping you be depressed?
